Bike Safety Classes

Traffic Skills 101 - Long Beach

Classes are monthly and begin again in February 2012.

Traffic Skills 101 curriculum covers everything from bike selection to simple maintenance to fixing a flat, to strategies for riding a bike safely and confidently. It is taught to very small classes (generally 5 to 10 students), in two sessions: 2 hours on a Wednesday evening and 3 hours on a Saturday. The Wednesday evening session is classroom work; the Saturday session is in two parts: parking lot safety drills, and a ride through Long Beach streets under the eye of one or more instructors. Instructors are all League Certified Instructors (from the League of American Cyclists). To learn more and register online please click here.

* Classes are FREE for CSULB students and employees. For all others, there is a suggested donation of $20, which includes free membership to the Long Beach Cyclists + $5 JAX Bike Bucks.

Confident City Cycling

Classes begin again in February 2012

Many people are intimidated and discouraged by the way cars dominate the roadway.  Through education and practice, Confident City Cycling builds your personal confidence for riding a bicycle on city streets.  Participants take away an understanding of their rights and duties as a driver operating a bicycle safely and legally on public roadways. Most importantly, students develop the ability to identify unsafe traffic situations and make decisions that can prevent crashes and collisions.  Participants also learn how to perform pre-ride bike safety checks and basic roadside repairs, such as fixing a flat tire and minor mechanical adjustments. The course includes a student manual, a review of state and local laws, on-bike skill development, a Planet Bike Beamer headlight/taillight set, Pedros tire levers, and a Nutcase helmet.

Confident City Cycling is a two-part class, the first date shown is the classroom session and second date shown is the hands-on session. You must complete the first session in order to participate in the second session. The classes are free. To learn more and sign up click here.
