Saturday April 28th from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm Women On Bikes SoCal will host an architectural tour by some of Long Beach’s mid-century treasures for $25.00 per person, $15.00 for students. The tour will include homes in the mid-century rich Alamitos Heights and Park Estates neighborhoods of Long Beach and sections of the campus at California State University Long Beach designed by Edward Killingsworth.
Mid-century homes will be viewed by Richard Neutra, John Lautner, Paul Tay, Edward Killingsworth, and more. The interior of one of the Richard Neutra houses in the Park Estates neighborhood will be viewed as well! Our tour hosts are the local authors of “Long Beach: The Unexpected Metropolis” and mid century modern design specialists Cara Mullio and Jennifer M. Volland. This tour is in support of the Women On Bikes SoCal “Let’s Double the Number of Women and Girls Riding Bikes” campaign. Tickets must be purchased by Friday April 27th online. About Our Tour Guides
Cara Mullio is co-principal at Root Development, LLC, and a freelance writer and curator specializing in contemporary architecture. Previously she served as the director of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House and curatorial associate at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She holds a master of real estate development from the University of Southern California and a master of arts in architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Jennifer M. Volland is an independent writer and curator based in Long Beach. She is co-author, along with Cara Mullio, of Long Beach Architecture: The Unexpected Metropolis (Hennessey + Ingalls, 2004). Volland and Mullio are currently collaborating on their second book, a monograph of Case Study House architect Edward A. Killingsworth. Volland is the co-curator Grand Hotel, an exhibition on the evolution of hotel design that will be presented at the Vancouver Art Gallery in May 2013.
